Marla Wright's Education Portfolio

FIELD EXPERIENCE

Picture
Service learning is the most rewarding and active part to education classes.  This opportunity allows me to work with different classrooms each semester at CGCC.  I am able to learn about the classroom settings in the course as well as being an active part in the classroom with a mentor teacher.  This experience as a future teacher gives me an idea of what it is like to be a teacher and the challenges that may arise.

SPRING 2010

PattersonElementary School

Grade: Kindergarten

Hours: 20.0

My experience this semester was at PattersonElementary School.  My mentor teacher and the students were great.  I was able to jump right into helping the students in any way I could with their work.  My focus was to see the diversity within the classroom with my culture diversity education class.  The students in this class have mixed races of whites, Hispanics, and 2 students who are black.  While I was there I was able to notice a slight difference with the different reading levels the students were on.  There are a couple of students who are English Language Learners and they are mainstreamed within the classroom.  There are not enough students at Patterson for an ELL classroom, and it can be challenging for the teachers to accommodate to those students.  My teacher does the best she can and has said the students have been making great progress with their school work.  Overall I enjoyed being in this classroom and the students loved being around me and gave me lots of hugs.  I have always thought Kindergarten was an easy grade to teach but it’s actually harder.  At times it is exhausting and my mentor is a wonderful Kindergarten teacher.  I was sad to have to end my experience in this classroom.  It was a warm and friendly environment to be in and makes me more excited for my next experience.  I am able to leave with more confidence within my self for my own students in my own classroom one day.

Mentor Teacher Comments: “Marla is great with the students and very helpful.  She will make a great teacher someday!!”
