PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Picture
As I continue my education on learning outside the classroom I will attend professional development classes these include presentations, workshops and conferences on multicultral education.  These classes will help me gain more knowledge and skills about the different cultures.  I will be more aware of my students' diversity and I will be able to incorporate multiculture within my curriculum.

I feel that attending this workshop on learning how to use weebly.com will help me through the semester.  While I continue to add to this professional portfolio it will show more knowledge I have gained throughout the year.  I learned how to design a website specifically for education purposes.  I was able to learn how to upload pictures and documents for professionals to view online.  I will be committed to building up this portfolio not only because it is part of the class, but also to use in the future when it comes time to look for jobs in the education field.  This website will show all the experience I have had in the classrooms and the classes I have taken to prepare myself for teaching.  I feel that this website of weebly.com is very beneficial for teachers as well as principals to have access to. This will show how prepared I am as a student as well as a future educator.  I have included areas that are important aspects of teaching on this site.

Branded Phoenix was one of the most moving film screenings I have ever attended.  The speaker is Director of City Initiatives and he talked about “child prostitution” which in his words, he calls it “child sex slavery.”  He has worked in Phoenix with other non-profit organizations to help educate others on child exploitation.  Also he is the president and co-founder of street light which is a center where these children go to after they are either picked up by police or whether they decide to stop on their own.  This center is in the process of being put together now and will hopefully open soon.  While passing a flyer about this film screening it caught my attention and I was very interested in attending.  While watching this film I couldn’t believe the starting age of these children being thirteen starting prostitution.  At this age the girls are very vulnerable and have a hopeless state of mind.  The girls that are involved in this always feel dirty during and after these sexual favors.  With technology today these girls are being networked behind closed doors and not walking the streets.  Their pimps will put a profile on craigslist, myspace, or facebook.  The guys that are doing this to the girls are of any age, and any ethnicity.  The pimps are always looking for their next victim whether it is at their school, on the internet, and even the malls.  Once these girls are introduced into prostitution they no longer belong to their parents but belong to their pimps.  As a future teacher I can give my students awareness of the world around them.  By doing this it will show compassion and maybe help the student think twice about making a horrible decision.  Even educating parents on any information will help open their eyes and be more actively involved in their children’s lives.  In general by knowing about this culture will help me understand warning signs of student’s whether it is withdrawal, or acting out in any way in class.  Society is a dangerous place and can do some serious harm to these children.  Together we can make a difference and not have this in “NIMBY” (not in my backyard.)  I was so shocked to hear that the age is thirteen for prostitution.  How scary and I literally thought this could be my daughter if I am not an active part of her life.  The fact that this can happen anywhere even at school amazes me.  It is up to me as future teacher to make sure this never happens in my classroom or school.  In the summer of 2002 five prostitutes were murdered in downtown Phoenix.  Prostitution doesn’t target one group of people it targets all groups.  These girls are being raped and cut by knives from these guys.  If you don’t raise your own children, than someone you would least want to raise your child will.
